Performing Arts

Equipping, inspiring and challenging students to develop their God-given abilities through performance for His glory.

Performing arts includes our music and drama programs. Our music program is designed to build students’ knowledge and appreciation of music from Kindergarten through 12th Grade, with opportunities to listen for appreciation, develop practical instrumental playing, develop singing skills and perform for family and friends or competitively.

Our drama program provides opportunities for students in 8th Grade through 12th Grade to create and perform meaningful productions as a part of a team. There are areas for involvement on stage and behind the scenes.

How it Works

In Elementary School students participate in General Music two days per week to use of a variety of activities, games, singing and instrument playing to develop their foundational interaction of music.

In Middle School, 5th and 6th Graders participate in general music and begin band. 6th Graders are enrolled in our 6th Grade choir. 7th and 8th Graders choose whether they want to participate in band, choir, both or learn about non-performing music in general music and digital music classes.

Middle School is also when students are introduced to theatre and drama. 7th Graders are enrolled in an introductory drama class, which does not perform live. Then, in 8th Grade, students are given the option to join live drama performances.

In High School, students can participate in Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Band and/or Chamber Singers. All performing ensembles engage in a variety of performances throughout the year.

Performance Opportunities

In Elementary School, classes put on musical performance nights annually for family and friends.

During Middle School, the concert band performs annually for family and friends, the 6th Grade choir performs at Chenery Auditorium during the local choir festival and 8th Graders who participate in Drama class put on productions in the fall and the spring.

Students have to opportunity to pursue additional musical opportunities such as the Solo and Ensemble Contest, the annual SWMVF Choral Festival at WMU, and the MSVMA/MSBOA District Festivals.
