Music is an important means of praising God. At Kalamazoo Christian, students are encouraged to explore their musical abilities and interests through a variety of music education programs. Music education at Kalamazoo Christian Schools contributes to a fuller, enriched life by helping students develop skills for performing and appreciating both secular and sacred music.
One of the priorities in our music education programs is to help students understand how music can be used to glorify God and His creation. To accomplish this, our music instructors encourage students to explore different methods of performing and enjoying music: on their own, in a group, for others to enjoy or as an avenue of service, worship or ministry of the church.
Elementary and Middle School
Students at Kalamazoo Christian Elementary and Middle Schools are involved in music programs at each grade level. Classes receive instruction on a variety of musical skills. While our younger students learn the basics of recognizing different pitches and sounds, our older students are introduced to slightly more complex concepts, such as the identification of basic music symbols and rhythm patterns. Classes are occasionally visited by KSO musicians and students also get the chance to visit the Kalamazoo Symphony.
At KCHS, students have the opportunity to sign up for a variety of music classes as electives. These courses – which include symphonic band, concert choir and chorale – introduce students to a variety of musical skills, including sight-reading, vocal production and musicianship. In addition, students may audition for the Ambassadors, a vocal performance group. Both the Ambassadors and the students in each music class perform numerous times throughout the year.
